Bilirubin Indirect

Indirect bilirubin, also known as unconjugated bilirubin, measures the portion of bilirubin that has not yet been processed by the liver. It is the result of the breakdown of hemoglobin from old red blood cells. Since it is not water-soluble, it cannot be excreted directly into bile and must be transported to the liver for conversion into direct (conjugated) bilirubin. Elevated levels of indirect bilirubin can indicate conditions such as hemolytic anemia, Gilbert's syndrome, or certain liver disorders. Testing both indirect and direct bilirubin helps provide a comprehensive understanding of a patient's liver function and overall health.
