Progesterone

Progesterone is a steroid hormone essential for regulating the menstrual cycle and supporting pregnancy. In women, it is primarily produced by the ovaries after ovulation and by the placenta during pregnancy. Progesterone prepares the endometrium (uterine lining) for the implantation of a fertilized egg and helps maintain a pregnancy by preventing uterine contractions that could cause the body to reject the developing embryo. It also plays a role in the development of mammary glands for milk production. In men and non-pregnant women, the adrenal glands produce small amounts of progesterone. Measuring progesterone levels can provide valuable insights into ovulation, fertility, and menstrual health. Abnormal progesterone levels can indicate various conditions, such as ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cysts, or adrenal gland disorders. This hormone is crucial for reproductive health and the successful continuation of pregnancy.
