**Serum Gastrin Test** measures the level of gastrin, a hormone produced by the stomach lining that regulates acid production for digestion. Gastrin stimulates the stomach's parietal cells to release hydrochloric acid, which helps break down food and absorb nutrients. This test is crucial when diagnosing conditions linked to abnormal acid production. ### Key Uses: 1. **Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (ZES):** Gastrin-secreting tumors (gastrinomas) in the pancreas or duodenum cause high gastrin levels and excessive stomach acid, leading to ulcers. 2. **Chronic Atrophic Gastritis:** Low acid production due to damaged stomach lining can increase gastrin levels. 3. **Pernicious Anemia:** Linked to low stomach acid and elevated gastrin. 4. **Monitoring Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) Use:** PPIs can raise gastrin levels due to reduced acid secretion. ### Procedure: A blood sample is taken after fasting for 8–12 hours, as eating stimulates gastrin release, which could skew results. ### Normal Range: Typically **50–150 pg/mL**; elevated levels indicate possible underlying disorders. However, results require careful interpretation alongside clinical symptoms and other diagnostic tests.
