TIBC- Total Iron Binding Capacity

Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC) measures the maximum amount of iron that can be bound by proteins in the blood, primarily transferrin. It reflects the body's ability to transport iron. A high TIBC usually indicates iron deficiency, as the body produces more transferrin to capture available iron. Conversely, low TIBC can be associated with conditions like iron overload or chronic diseases, where transferrin production is reduced. TIBC is often measured alongside serum iron and ferritin to assess overall iron status.

Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC) is a blood test that measures the maximum amount of iron that can be bound by proteins in the bloodstream, primarily transferrin. Transferrin is a protein produced by the liver that transports iron throughout the body. TIBC reflects the ability of transferrin to bind and transport iron, providing insights into the body’s iron status.

The TIBC test is used to evaluate iron metabolism and diagnose iron-related disorders. It is often performed in conjunction with serum iron and ferritin tests to assess overall iron levels and determine the underlying cause of anemia or iron deficiency. A high TIBC typically indicates iron deficiency anemia, as the body produces more transferrin in response to low iron levels. Conversely, a low TIBC can suggest conditions such as iron overload (hemochromatosis), chronic inflammation, or liver disease, where transferrin production is reduced.

The TIBC test involves drawing a blood sample, which is then analyzed in a laboratory. Results are reported in micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL) and are interpreted alongside other iron studies to provide a comprehensive view of an individual's iron status and guide appropriate treatment strategies.
