Apolipoprotein B/A1 Ratio Apolipoprotein B and A1

The Apolipoprotein B/A1 ratio measures the balance between two key proteins in lipid metabolism: Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) and Apolipoprotein A1 (Apo A1). Apo B is the primary protein component of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and other atherogenic particles, while Apo A1 is the main protein component of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which helps remove cholesterol from the bloodstream. This ratio provides insight into cardiovascular risk by comparing the levels of these two proteins. A high Apo B/A1 ratio indicates a higher number of potentially harmful lipoprotein particles (associated with LDL) relative to the protective HDL particles (associated with Apo A1). A higher ratio is linked to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, as it reflects an imbalance between pro-atherogenic and anti-atherogenic lipoproteins. This ratio is used alongside other lipid profile measurements to evaluate overall heart health and guide treatment decisions.
