The H. pylori IgG antibodies test detects the presence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies specific to Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that infects the stomach lining. IgG antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to an H. pylori infection. This blood test helps determine if a person has been exposed to the bacterium, suggesting either a current or past infection.

A positive result indicates that the person has been infected with H. pylori at some point, which is often associated with conditions like peptic ulcers, chronic gastritis, and in some cases, gastric cancer. However, the IgG test does not distinguish between an active infection and a past infection that has been cleared. For determining active infection or evaluating treatment response, other tests like the stool antigen test or urea breath test are used in conjunction. The IgG antibody test is useful for initial diagnosis and screening but should be interpreted with other clinical information.
