Herpes Simplex Virus I -IgG

The HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus) I & II IgG test measures the presence of IgG antibodies against HSV types 1 and 2 in the blood. These antibodies indicate past exposure or infection with the virus, as IgG antibodies typically develop several weeks after initial infection and persist for life. This test helps determine whether a person has been infected with HSV-1 (commonly causing oral herpes) or HSV-2 (commonly causing genital herpes) in the past.

Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a common virus that typically causes oral herpes, which manifests as cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth and lips. It is highly contagious and primarily transmitted through direct contact with infected saliva, mucous membranes, or skin. After the initial infection, HSV-1 remains dormant in nerve cells and can reactivate later, leading to recurrent outbreaks.

While HSV-1 is most commonly associated with oral infections, it can also cause genital herpes through oral-genital contact. Symptoms of an HSV-1 infection include painful blisters or ulcers at the infection site, itching, and flu-like symptoms during the initial outbreak. Although there is no cure for HSV-1, antiviral medications can help manage symptoms and reduce the frequency of outbreaks, improving the quality of life for those affected.
