Direct bilirubin, also known as conjugated bilirubin, measures the portion of bilirubin that has been processed by the liver. When red blood cells break down, they produce unconjugated bilirubin, which is not water-soluble. The liver converts this unconjugated form into direct bilirubin by attaching it to glucuronic acid, making it water-soluble and allowing it to be excreted into bile.
