Bilirubin Direct

Bilirubin Direct

Direct bilirubin, also known as conjugated bilirubin, measures the portion of bilirubin that has been processed by the liver. When red blood cells break down, they produce unconjugated bilirubin, which is not water-soluble. The liver converts this unconjugated form into direct bilirubin by attaching it to glucuronic acid, making it water-soluble and allowing it to be excreted into bile. A direct bilirubin test is crucial for diagnosing liver function and various medical conditions. Elevated levels can indicate liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or bile duct obstruction, as well as conditions like hemolytic anemia. It is often measured alongside total bilirubin to assess the ratio of direct to indirect bilirubin, providing further insights into the underlying health issues. Monitoring bilirubin levels helps healthcare providers evaluate liver function, diagnose jaundice, and guide treatment decisions.
