Procalcitonin

Procalcitonin

Procalcitonin is a blood biomarker that measures the levels of procalcitonin, a precursor of the hormone calcitonin. Elevated levels indicate a bacterial infection or sepsis, as procalcitonin levels rise in response to bacterial toxins and systemic inflammation. This test helps differentiate between bacterial and viral infections, guiding appropriate antibiotic treatment. It is particularly useful in managing patients with suspected sepsis, lower respiratory tract infections, and other serious bacterial infections, aiding in early diagnosis and monitoring treatment effectiveness.

Procalcitonin is a peptide precursor of the hormone calcitonin, primarily produced by the thyroid gland. However, in response to bacterial infections, procalcitonin is also produced by various tissues and cells throughout the body. Its levels in the blood rise significantly during systemic bacterial infections and sepsis, making it a valuable biomarker for diagnosing and monitoring these conditions.

Procalcitonin levels remain low in viral infections and non-infectious inflammatory conditions, helping to distinguish bacterial infections from other causes of inflammation. This differentiation is crucial for guiding appropriate antibiotic therapy, reducing unnecessary antibiotic use, and combating antibiotic resistance.

The procalcitonin test is particularly useful in managing patients with suspected sepsis, lower respiratory tract infections, and other severe bacterial infections. By measuring procalcitonin levels, healthcare providers can make more informed decisions regarding the initiation, continuation, or cessation of antibiotic treatments, thereby improving patient outcomes and optimizing treatment strategies.
