The Philadelphia chromosome is an abnormal chromosome that is formed by a translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22, specifically involving the BCR (Breakpoint Cluster Region) gene on chromosome 22 and the ABL (Abelson) gene on chromosome 9. This translocation results in the creation of the BCR-ABL fusion gene, which produces an abnormal tyrosine kinase enzyme. The presence of the Philadelphia chromosome is a hallmark of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and is also associated with some cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Its detection is crucial for diagnosing these cancers and guiding treatment strategies.
