Serum IGG4 Level

A serum IgG4 level measures the concentration of Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) antibodies in the blood. IgG4 is one of the four subclasses of Immunoglobulin G (IgG), which are critical components of the body's immune response. Elevated IgG4 levels can be indicative of IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD), a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by tissue infiltration with IgG4-positive plasma cells, fibrosis, and organ dysfunction. This disease can affect multiple organs, including the pancreas, salivary glands, kidneys, and lymph nodes, leading to conditions like autoimmune pancreatitis and retroperitoneal fibrosis.

Testing serum IgG4 levels is a diagnostic tool used to identify and monitor IgG4-RD, as well as to differentiate it from other inflammatory or autoimmune diseases with similar symptoms. Elevated IgG4 levels alone are not diagnostic, and clinical correlation with other signs, symptoms, and histopathological findings is necessary for an accurate diagnosis. Regular monitoring can also guide treatment decisions and track disease progression.
