Triglycerides

Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in the blood. They are composed of three fatty acids attached to a glycerol backbone. Triglycerides are the main form of stored fat in the body and are derived from the food we eat, particularly fats and carbohydrates. After eating, any calories not immediately used for energy are converted into triglycerides and stored in fat cells. Later, hormones release these triglycerides for energy between meals.

A triglycerides test measures the level of triglycerides in the blood. High levels of triglycerides, known as hypertriglyceridemia, can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, pancreatitis, and other metabolic disorders. Elevated triglyceride levels can result from factors such as obesity, uncontrolled diabetes, excessive alcohol consumption, a high-calorie diet, and genetic predispositions. Regular monitoring and management of triglyceride levels are important for maintaining heart health and reducing the risk of associated diseases through lifestyle changes and, if necessary, medication.
