Antithrombin III (ATIII) is a protein produced by the liver that plays a critical role in regulating blood clotting. It functions as a natural anticoagulant by inhibiting several key clotting factors, including thrombin and factor Xa, which are essential for blood clot formation. By controlling these factors, ATIII helps prevent excessive clotting and maintains a balance in the blood coagulation system.

The Antithrombin III test measures the level of this protein in the blood. Abnormally low levels of ATIII can lead to an increased risk of developing abnormal blood clots, known as thrombosis, which can result in conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism. Conversely, elevated levels of ATIII might be seen in inflammatory conditions or liver disease. This test is used to evaluate clotting disorders, assess the risk of thrombosis, and monitor patients undergoing anticoagulant therapy.
