Rheumatoid factor (RF) is an autoantibody that targets the body's own tissues, commonly associated with autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It is detected through a blood test and is often used to help diagnose RA and other inflammatory conditions. However, RF can also be present in other diseases, such as lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome, and even some infections. A positive RF test does not confirm RA, as some healthy individuals may have it without disease. High RF levels often indicate more severe disease activity. Additional tests, like anti-CCP antibodies and imaging, help in making a more accurate diagnosis.
