Cytomegalo Virus - CMV - IgG Avidity

The CMV (Cytomegalovirus) IgG avidity test measures the strength with which IgG antibodies bind to the CMV virus. This test differentiates between recent and past CMV infections by assessing the maturity of the immune response. High-avidity IgG antibodies indicate a past infection or long-term immunity, as these antibodies have had more time to form stronger bonds with the virus. Conversely, low-avidity IgG antibodies suggest a recent infection, as the immune response is still developing. This distinction is crucial in pregnant women, as a recent CMV infection can pose significant risks to the developing fetus, potentially leading to congenital CMV infection, which can cause serious birth defects and developmental problems. The CMV IgG avidity test helps healthcare providers assess the timing of the infection, guide clinical management, and make informed decisions regarding the care of pregnant women exposed to CMV.
